Honeymoon Guide to California - Part 1

California may well conjure up visions of Hollywood stars and tanned surfers, dotcom millionaires and tree-hugging communities, but that’s just the surface. We’ll help you dig a little deeper to uncover the secret jewels and amazing contrasts of America’s Golden State and discover how California truly makes for a memorable and adventurous honeymoon.

With so much to see and do in California we recommend starting with Los Angeles. Lovingly nicknamed the “City of Angels”, LA is arguably one of the most alluring and entertaining cities in the world. This sprawling metropolis has something to suit every taste. Whether you’re both looking for some peace and relaxation along its golden beaches, a firsthand glimpse of a movie star lifestyle or a shopping extravaganza, you will absolutely find something to tickle your fancy!

If you’re after a bit of  culture we recommend the outstanding Getty Center. Its impressive collections of art and history teamed with spectacular views, architecture and gardens, will make you want to spend the whole day here. Plus, there are plenty of wonderful restaurants to try as well.

Speaking of food, LA sure does their food better than anyone, especially their fish tacos! Make sure you ask some of the locals for the best taco truck to stop by because trust us they aren’t all made equally. And then there’s the famous In-n-Out Burger which you will only find in California so you must try it whilst here. Our tip is to order “Animal Style” from the secret menu which is only available online.

Head to Santa Monica for gorgeous art deco gems where you can stay steps away from the warm golden beach and the fashionable Third Street Promenade. Santa Monica has a relaxed vibe away from the hustle and bustle of city life so hire a bike and cycle along the boardwalk south to world renowned Venice Beach.  Perfect for people watching this is a spot not to be missed; here you will find entertainers, restaurants and eclectic boutiques plus the famous Muscle Beach, an outdoor gym where those who are tough enough and like a bit of attention work out in front of hundreds of by passers.

If you love Forrest Gump or just love seafood, dine at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co on Santa Monica Pier and enjoy shrimp heaven. Part of the experience is a Forrest Gump quiz whilst you wait for your table to be cleared. But don’t worry; they still let you eat if you don’t know any of the answers! Put your name down for a table as soon as you get there as there is usually a wait and explore Santa Monica Pier’s  amusement park, souvenir shops and aquarium.

When you’re in LA, you really must soak up the picturesque views and the lovely warm weather and get outdoors. Our favourite way to do this is to take a scenic hike. Hiking the Runyon Canyon is a great way to experience another side to this diverse city. Here, you can enjoy views of the ocean, downtown LA and even the Hollywood sign. Or if you want a dip in the ocean why not catch some waves at Topanga Beach which is less crowded than most of the nearby beaches and boasts the city’s best surf.

Be a big kid for a day by revisiting your childhood at Disneyland. We can guarantee you will not stop smiling all day! Only a 45 minute drive from LA or take an Amtrak train with free shuttle connection to the theme park. It makes for the perfect day trip or better still, spend the night at the resort for some serious fun. Time your trip there on a day when there is a fireworks display; a truly magical moment.

No matter what your style or interests, there are lots of great activities in LA to create some truly wonderful memories for the both of you that you’ll long cherish and remember.
